The heart’s law

Faith Focus for the Week

How do I draw on my faith in making decisions, especially those where the morally
good choice is not obvious?

A well-formed conscience is a Catholic steward’s compass. If we listen to our conscience, we neither hoard nor squander our resources; we cannot ignore people in need; we strive to live as Gods loving people.

The Second Vatican Council urged Catholics to search their own hearts when making decisions. Consider this thoughtful passage from Guadium et Spes, the Vatican II document also known as the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World:

“Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, tells him inwardly at the right moment: do this, shun that. For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God. . . . By conscience . . . that law is . . . fulfilled in the love of God and of one’s neighbor” (no. 16).
